Principal's Corner

Welcome to Burnett Elementary School

Welcome to Burnett Elementary School – “My Best Under Every Situation”. Whether you are new to our school, our district, or are returning for another year, please know that we at Burnett are all excited to welcome you to the 2016-2017 school year!

As your Principal and Assistant Principal, we are excited to be with the Burnett community! My name is Kacia Thompson and I am thrilled to be your Principal! I was formerly the principal at Dorsett Shoals Elementary for 5 years, and I am so excited about heading into my third year at Burnett. In addition, Paul Collins will return as our Assistant Principal. He came to Burnett from Turner Middle School, and he is just as excited as I am about his third year with the Tiger Cubs.

As we move into the third year of our transition to Burnett, we are even more conscious of the anticipation and eagerness that comes with leadership. As with last year, it remains our goal to continue learning about our school and getting to know the Burnett community even better. We want to know what is important to you and how we can work together to provide a quality education for your children. We believe that genuine collaboration between home and school will be the key to a successful year for you and your children. We are honored to have another year to serve this community, and will continue to work hard to gain your trust and respect as your administration.

We are prepared to address the many challenges and changes the new school year may bring. Our primary focus will be on providing students with a safe, warm, and inviting school. This will be a year to celebrate the positive things that our students and the BUES community bring to the Douglas County School System.

Our efforts will be on creating a family- friendly school, positive learning environment, and student achievement. We are fortunate to have the resources to ensure that your children are receiving a quality education. In math, students will set math goals and learn problem solving skills. In writing, we will implement the writer’s workshop model which will allow students the opportunity to learn the writing process and share their work. For reading, we will continue to motivate our students through the Accelerated Reading Program and MyOn. In addition, we have added a science lab as part of our special areas rotation. These are just a few things that Burnett will offer to ensure a rigorous and engaging education for your children.

In order to accomplish high student achievement, communication between home and school is an essential component for student success. Every child will have an agenda book that will require your signature daily. In addition, we will be implementing a new program called Class Dojo. This program will allow you to see how your child is doing throughout the day, allow you to engage in your child’s education, and will also give you the ability to communicate with your child’s teacher at the click of a button and email.

Burnett Elementary offers a variety of ways for you to support the school. Please come visit our Parent Resource Room to receive information on how you can work with your children at home and school. In addition, we invite you to serve on the Parent Advisory Committee, PTA, as a volunteer, or as a mentor. Many opportunities and learning experiences are in place for your child at our school! Your active participation makes all the difference in the success of our school.
